Top things to do in and around Lisbon

Last year, we lived in Lisbon for one month and had a lot of time to explore the best sights in Lisbon. Continue reading if you want to know which places to add to your Lisbon travel bucket list.

Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo

At this tiny street, you will find one of the few funiculars that are left in Lisbon. Although the tram is used very frequently, also by locals, the funiculars are mostly tourist attractions. But, they for sure look beautiful and very iconic.

Castelo de S. Jorge

One of our favourite places to watch the sunset in Lisbon. Although you need to pay 5€ to get into the castle, it is worth the entry price. We recommend coming before sunset and walking around the castle, as you can also get into the old buildings. At sunset, the best spot is probably the terrace/main place overlooking the city.

Miradouro de santa luzia

Every time we’re in a new city, we like to get up for sunrise and experience the still sleeping city. Especially in summer, when the sun rises very early, the city is still asleep. Miradouro de Santa Luzia was our favourite place to watch the sunset in Lisbon.

LinHa 28

Everyone always talks about Linha 28 – tram, line 28 – and it actually is a beautiful tram to take! It drives all across the city of Lisbon, winding around the small streets of Alfama. Depending on the time of the year, it can be quite hard to get a spot in the tram but you should at least give it a try!

Alfama

Alfama is the old town and probably the most colourful neighbourhood of Lisbon. It is a great place to just walk around for hours and get lost in the small streets. I could have taken thousands of pictures, as there are so many beautiful old buildings. You should plan enough time to simply walk around the neighbourhood and breath in the vibe of Lisbon!

TOrre de Belém

Torre de Belém is also a really nice place for sunset when the light is extra golden. But also during the day, after you grab a Pastel de Belém you could come here and walk along the waterfront. You can either take the tram/train to Belem or you can walk along the river Tejo.

PrAca do comércio

Praca do comércio and Arco da Rua Augusta are probaly the most iconic sights of Lisbon. Make sure to visit them but don’t calculate too much time for this as there are so many other things to see in Lisbon!

Sunset at River Tejo

Another beautiful place to watch the sunset is right next to the water at river Tejo. If you go to Cais do Sodre and continue walking along the waterfront towards Ponte de 25 de Abril, you will find several amazing place to sit down and enjoy the sunset.

Lx Factory

LxFactory is the hip place to visit. Located in an old factory, you can find many small cafés and shops. Make sure not to come too early, as most places don’t open before 11 am. But then, you can get lost in all the different boutiques and spend some time just strolling around, taking pictures and enjoying the vibe.

Pasteis de nata cooking class at Lisbon cooking academy

If you have more time in Lisbon, you should book yourself a cooking/baking class. Friends of ours visited us for a long weekend and we did a Pastéis de Nata baking class together. We learned how to make Pastéis de Nata from scratch plus we could eat them afterwards. This was such a nice experience and I think it were the best Pastéis de Nata we ever had!

Sintra

Another amazing place to visit outside of Lisbon is Sintra. It is an hour’s ride away from Lisbon but really worth it. Before getting there we thought it was overhyped but to be honest, it isn’t! There are two must-see places in Sintra:
1. Palace of Pena – the colourful palace with its beautiful gardens
2. Quinta da Regaleira
